Castagneto Carducci – Nearby Villages

Castagneto Carducci is a small medieval village nestled on the top of the hill.

It is built around the Castle of the Counts of Gherardesca, built around the year one thousand.

The village, once surrounded by walls of which the front facing the sea survives, forms the original nucleus of the town. A country made of paved alleys, fountains, natural terraces overlooking the sea and the countryside, small squares, ancient artisan shops and characteristic trattorias.

The urban center has developed according to a scheme of concentric rings that give life to a system of streets, alleys and squares. The castle had, in its long history, numerous modifications and subsequent remakes, like the parish church of San Lorenzo, long used as a castle church.

In front of the church of San Lorenzo, stands the Church of S.S. Crucifix inside which is preserved the wooden Crucifix of the fifteenth century.
